The English School of Asturias

School community

Lorem Ipsum Dolor

At ESA we believe a strong school community helps students feel included, valued, and inspired to achieve their best both inside and outside the classroom. Through regular activities and initiatives that bring together students, teachers and families we make our school into one big family.

School wide celebrations

We organise regular events all throughout the year, from our Halloween disco to Christmas performances, World Book Day, harvest festival, class graduations, charity food drives, February carnival celebrations and our much-loved Summer Fair. These events give us the chance to come together, and get to know each other and help the local community while having fun.

Our school house system

One of the school’s defining features is our house system, which plays a central role in building community, teamwork, leadership, and student engagement. Traditionally focused on Key Stage 2, the system is now being expanded across the entire school, from pre-nursery through to Year 13.

Students are placed into one of four houses – Romans, Greeks, Vikings, or Egyptians. Throughout the year, pupils participate in a wide variety of house events and competitions designed to celebrate many different talents and interests. These include sports competitions, talent shows, spelling bees, art contests, quizzes and creative activities such as paper aeroplane competitions.

The house system is highly collaborative, with children themselves helping shape activities and competitions through suggestions and feedback. The aim is to ensure that every child has opportunities to contribute and succeed, regardless of whether their strengths are academic, artistic, sporting, or creative.

Student Council

The Student Council includes elected representatives from each year group who meet regularly with school leadership to share ideas, suggestions, and concerns. Since its launch, students have gradually taken greater ownership of the council, launching initiatives and organising activities independently.

Recently, student council members organised an Earth Day awareness competition, alongside other charity fundraising projects.

European Youth Parliament

The European Youth Parliament (EYP) is a nonprofit, youth-led educational organization that brings together teenagers and young adults from across Europe to debate political, social, economic, and environmental issues in a parliamentary-style format. Participants are given a topic currently affecting Spain or the EU and then they have to prepare an argument and debate the topic with other members.

We are very proud that some of our sixth form students have reached the national finals due to be held in Galicia in October 2026. Thanks to our recent leavers and current Year 13 students, the EYP was brought to Asturias for the first time in 2026.

Family Forum

The school has a Family Forum, which includes one representative from each academic year. The Forum acts as a key communication channel between families and the school, helping to share feedback, ideas and suggestions.

The forum meets regularly with the Headteacher to discuss a range of topics, including student wellbeing, school initiatives and community events, as well as to address any questions or concerns raised by families.

In addition, the Family Forum plays an active role within the school community, supporting the promotion of events and encouraging families to get involved. It fosters a collaborative and positive environment, where families can contribute to the ongoing development of the school

ESA Talks

The ESA Talks are an initiative by our school aimed at families, consisting of a series of free informative talks delivered by experts in a range of fields. Their purpose is to provide practical and up-to-date guidance on topics relevant to students’ education and development.

Throughout this year, we have covered a variety of topics of great interest, such as Sex and Relationships Education, the use of technology and artificial intelligence (Learning Technologies and AI for Families), a First Aid Workshop for ESA Families, and a session focused on the importance of small habits in learning, including sleep routines, the use of dummies and bottles, and managing tantrums (Small Habits, Great Learning).

All these talks take place at the school and are led by specialised professionals and our teaching staff, ensuring a rigorous and high-quality approach. They provide an excellent opportunity for families to stay informed, address questions, and share experiences in a welcoming environment.
In addition, the school has also organised specific information sessions on key academic stages, such as the IGCSE and A Levels programmes, with the aim of helping families better understand these stages and support their children throughout their academic journey.
