Primary years at ESA

KEY STAGE 1: AGES 5-7 | KEY STAGE 2: AGES 7-11

Building knowledge and developing confidence

In Primary, we follow the English national curriculum, with additional elements of the Spanish curriculum, so pupils learn in a bilingual environment. In this way our students continue to develop their skills in English, and begin to explore concepts in mathematics, science, music, sport, art while following Spanish language and literature, and sociales classes.

Learning is organised around topic-based and project-led themes, often connecting geography, history, science, and language across both the English and Spanish curricula. Pupils also have dedicated classes in music, art and sports. We aim to make learning meaningful and memorable by linking classroom learning with practical activities, outdoor exploration, and collaborative themes.

Class assemblies

Our Class Assemblies are a highlight of the Primary calendar. Each class has the opportunity to create and perform a short play based on their current topics or important themes. These assemblies give
pupils the chance to develop and showcase their performance skills – whether speaking, dancing or singing – entertaining peers and parents and sharing important messages.

We also enjoy moments of celebration in our assemblies where certificates of achievement are given out

What makes our programme unique?

  • British curriculum with added elements of the Spanish curriculum to create a unique bilingual education.
  • Full English immersion to ensure complete comprehension and expression
  • Personalized attention: small groups to ensure that each child receives the necessary support for their development.
  • Active methodology: the use of technology and innovative resources to facilitate learning and foster critical thinking.

Introduction from Ivan Hylton, Head of Primary

Our vibrant international school community is a place where immersive learning inspires curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning. Through English-language instruction and hands-on experiences, our students are encouraged to think critically, reflect deeply, and develop as lifelong learners.

We also place a strong emphasis on pastoral care, ensuring every child feels valued, supported, and cared for within a nurturing environment. Positive mindsets are fostered to help facilitate academic excellence. Our students are empowered to grow into compassionate, resilient, and globally minded individuals who are prepared to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Ivan Hylton, Head of Primary

Key Stage 1 (Year 1 and Year 2) – Ages 5 to 7

In Key Stage 1, children begin to consolidate their academic skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and science while also developing their ability to work as a team and solve problems. We use a play-based and hands-on approach, allowing children to learn in a fun and meaningful way.

Pupils study the following areas through an interdisciplinary and project-based approach based on the English National Curriculum. Alongside these subjects, pupils have weekly lessons in music, art, and PE (physical education).

Main Subjects:

  • English Language: Improving reading, writing, and oral expression.
  • Mathematics: Introduction to basic arithmetic, such as addition, subtraction, and patterns.
  • Science: Exploring the natural world, living beings, and materials.
  • Social and Emotional Development: Promoting cooperation and conflict resolution.

Key Stage 2 (Year 3 to Year 6) – Ages 7 to 11

As students progress into Key Stage 2, they begin to study more complex subjects, such as history, geography, art, and technology, in addition to furthering their studies in mathematics and science. This stage focuses more on students' autonomy, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Projects are designed to be immersive, creative, and connected to real-world experiences. In Year 6, for example, students study mountains and rivers while exploring the Asturian landscape and wider global geography. These topics are supported through educational trips and residential experiences, including visits to coastal towns, mountain regions, and culturally significant cities such as Toledo.

Main Subjects:

  • English Language: improving writing, reading, and comprehension of more complex texts.
  • Mathematics: advanced operations, such as multiplication, division, fractions, and geometry.
  • Science: a deeper study of subjects like the human body, the solar system, and ecosystems.
  • History and geography: introduction to historical events and the study of different cultures and countries.
  • Technology: using digital tools and basic programming.
  • Art, music, and physical education: fostering creativity and physical development through artistic and sports activities

A word from our KS2 Coordinator

In Key Stage 2, we foster a vibrant, interactive, and fun learning culture designed to challenge every student to achieve their very best. Our curriculum focuses on building confidence and essential lifelong skills, including public speaking, critical thinking, creativity, and literacy excellence. Through our vibrant House system and year-round competitions, we cultivate a strong sense of community where every child has the opportunity to shine. Ultimately, our aim is to inspire a lifelong love of learning and nurture students who are genuinely proud of their school.
